E <br />Infection Prevention & Control Program <br />e. Washed and decontaminated each time they are emptied. <br />Approved methods of decontamination include, but are not limited <br />to: <br />I. Exposure to hot water at 180 degrees Fahrenheit for a <br />minimum of 15 seconds. <br />H. Rinsing or immersing in one of the following for a <br />minimum of 3 minutes: <br />® Hypochlorite solution [500 parts per million (ppm) <br />available chlorine] <br />• Phenolic solution [500 ppm active agent] <br />® Iodoform solution [100 ppm available iodine] <br />® Quaternary ammonium solution [400 ppm active <br />agent] <br />C. To containerize sharps, employees shall do the following: <br />o Place all sharps into a sharps container. <br />o Tape closed or tightly lid sharps containers ready for disposal to prevent <br />spills. <br />o Label sharps containers with the words "Sharps Waste" with the <br />international biohazard symbol and the word "Biohazard". <br />D. Storage and Security:. Storage enclosure must be clean and orderly, secured to <br />deny access to unauthorized persons, posted with the brightly colored warning <br />sign in English stating "CAUTION - BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE <br />AREA - UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEPO ", and in Spanish, <br />"C O - ZONA DE RESIDUOS - BI LOGICOS PELIGR SOS - <br />PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADAA PERSONAS NO AUTO AS". This <br />sign must be visible from 25 feet away. <br />4. Storage Time <br />A. 0�vhazord, \NOL� (Ayjjawgrs <br />or LLp ` <br />Full sharps containers ready for disposal may be stored for up to 7 days (longer <br />storage times may be requested from the local enforcement agency). <br />5. Handling And Treatment <br />A. A person handling medical waste must wear the appropriate type of personal <br />protective equipment, e.g., gloves, goggles, lab coats. <br />B. "Trash and laundry chutes, compactors, grinders shall not be used to transfer or <br />process untreated medical waste. <br />C. A person generating medical waste shall ensure that a registered hazardous waste <br />hauler hauls the waste to a permitted medical waste treatment facility. <br />D.
