0 INFECTIOUS WASTE POLICY <br />a. The storeroom on the East and West wings, next to the fire doors, is <br />designed as the Infectious Waste Storage area. <br />b. A sign has been posted on the door in red with white lettering. It <br />reads in English and Spanish, "Caution - Infectious Waste Storage Area, <br />Unauthorized Persons Keep Out". <br />c. The storeroom is to be kept locked. <br />d. The Infectious Waste will be stored in a tightly covered garbage con- <br />tainer labeled, "Infectious Waste". <br />e. Infectious Waste will be double bagged in red plastic bags, labeled <br />"Infectious Waste",, securely tied and dated. <br />2. Disposal: <br />a. All Infectious Wastes will be disposed of in red "Infectious Wastes" <br />bin, located in the rear of the building. <br />b. Stockton Scavenger service picks up and disposes of the Infectious <br />Wastes once a week, as per varience granted by San Joaquin County <br />Local Health District. <br />Infectious Wastes are defined as: <br />I.. Significant laboratory wastes including pathologic specimens (which shall in- <br />clude all tissues, specimens or blood elements, excreta and secretions ob- <br />tained from patients) and disposable fomites (an object or article that is <br />not in itself harmful but is able to harbor pathogens and may serve as an <br />agent to transmit infection) attendant thereto. <br />To include: all dressings, tubing, catheters, drainage bags, colostomy <br />supplies, sharps, swabs,etc. <br />a. All used needles, syringes and other sharps are to be disposed of in the <br />"Sharps Collector"* provided at each Nurses' Station. <br />2. Equipment, instruments, utensils and fomites of a disposable nature, from the <br />rooms of patients with suspected or diagnosed communicable disease requiring <br />C� <br />isolation. <br />3. Nothing in this proceduke shall be construed to limit the authority of the <br />local health officer to require waste to be treated as infectious. <br />*The "Sharps Collector" is a red, rigid plastic, punctureLpro of container with a <br />special one-way opening. Attached to each container is a cap which is used to seal <br />-I <br />it prior to disposal. The "Collector" is labeled "Infectious Waste" and is marked <br />with a "-FILL TO THIS LEVEL ONLY-" line. <br />
