C
INFECTIOUS WASTE POLICY
1. Storage:
L`
a. The storerooms on the East and West wings, next to the fire doors, is de-
signated as the Infectious Waste Storage area.
b. A sign has been posted on the door in red with white lettering. It reads
in English and Spanish, "Caution - Infectious Waste Storage Area, Unautho-
rized Persons Keep Out".
c. The Storeroom is to be kept locked.
d. The Infectious Waste will be stored in a tightly covered garbage container,
labeled, "Infectious Waste".
e. Infectious Waste will be double bagged in red plastic bags, labeled "Infec-
tious Waste", securely tied and dated.
2: Disposal:
a. All Infectious Wastes will be disposed of in the red "Infectious Wastes"
bin, located in the rear of the building.
b. Stockton Scavenger Service picks up and disposes of the Infecitous Wastes
twice each week.
Infectious Wastes are defined as:
1. Significant laboratory wastes including pathologic specimens (which shall in-
clude all tissues, specimens or blood elements, excreta and secretions ob-
tained from patients) and disposable fomites (an object or article that is
not in itself harmful but is able to harbor pathogens and may serve as an agent
to transmit infectioun) attendant thereto.
To include: all dressings, tubing, catheters, drainage bags, colostomy supplies,
sharps*, swabs, etc.
2. Equipment, instruments, utensils and fomites of a disposable nature, from the
rooms of patients with suspected or diagnosed communicable disease requiring
isolation.
3. Nothing in this procedure shall be construed to limit the authority of the
local health officer to require waste to be treated as infectious.
*All syringes and needles are rendered unusable by cutting up in the "disposoclip"
(Destructoclip) machine in each medication room. They are then disposed of in
the "Infectious Waste" container in the storeroom on the East and West wings after
being double -bagged.
10X96 2FA
