To provide for the collection, storage and disposal of medical waste in a manner that ensures the <br />health and safety of all inmates, staff and the general public. <br />References <br />Health and Safety Code, Chapter 6.5, Sections 25117 and 25117.5; California Administrative Code, Title <br />22, Division 4, Sections 66840 and 66840, Division 5, Section 70847, Division 6, Section 72657; ACA <br />Standards 2-4259 and 2-4341. <br />Approval and Review <br />This plan shall be reviewed and updated annually by the Health Care Manager during the month of April <br />andforw rough the Chief Deputy Warden for review and final approval by the Warden. <br />Responsibility <br />The Warden delegates overall responsibility to the Health Care Manager. <br />Methods <br />A. Types of Medical Waste Generated <br />Laboratory Wastes- Specimens or pathological and microbiological waste containing <br />blood or other infected materials. <br />2. Blood or Body Fluids- Liquid blood elements or other regulated body fluids, or articles <br />contaminated with blood or body fluids. <br />3. Sharps- Syringes, needles, blades, broken glass, microscope slides. <br />4. Surgical Specimens- Human tissues removed surgically or by autopsy. <br />5. Isolation Waste- Waste contaminated with excretion, exudates, or secretions from humans <br />who are isolated due to highly communicable diseases. <br />Deuel Vocational Institution is registered as a Large Quantity Generator. The estimated monthly amount of <br />Medical Waste generated is approximately 400, pounds. <br />B. Handling Medical Waste <br />Prior to handling any medical waste bags, containers or receptacles, appropriate clothing <br />shall be put on. Disposable gloves and aprons shall be maintained in all areas generating <br />medical waste. <br />
