Medical Waste Storage Methods <br />All medical waste shall be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area <br />until transported by the Biohazardous Waste Contractor. All biohazardous waste shall be <br />stored, handled or transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting covers <br />and are kept clean and in good repair. This area shall be marked with warning signs. The <br />wording of the warning shall say in English "CAUTION- BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE <br />STORAGE AREA- UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT" and in Spanish <br />"CUIDADO ZONA DE RESIDUOS BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS PROHIBDA LA <br />ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS". The biohazardous waste bags and <br />filled sharps containers shall not be stored for more than 7 days at a temperature above 32 <br />degrees Fahrenheit. This 7 day period begins when any waste has been placed in the <br />container. <br />All reusable rigid containers that are used for accumulation, transportation and storage of <br />medical waste shall be washed and decontaminated after a maximum of 7 days or less if <br />visible soiled. The approved method for decontamination is manual agitation to remove <br />visible soil using an approved solution. The solution shall be allowed to cover the surface <br />for a minimum of 3 minutes. The amount of solution mixed shall be no more than may be <br />used at any one time. <br />E. Emergency Action Plan <br />While it is highly unlikely that the Biohazards Waste Contractor would experience a shutdown of <br />operations, contingencies include retention of medical waste for not anore than 7 days from point <br />of generation above 32 degrees Fahrenheit or after 7 days use of an alternate Biohazardous Waste <br />Contractor. Another contingency for less well defined emergency situations would be to contact <br />the Department of Health Services, Medical Waste Program at (916) 327-6904 for guidance. <br />F. Medical Waste Contractor <br />St6ricycle, 11 75 White Rock Road, Rancho Cordova, CA 95742 telephone 1-800-643-0240, is <br />the auth ' d contractor for the removal, transportation and treatment of medical waste generated <br />by Deuel Vocational Institution. <br />G. At the Conclusion of Each Service Call, Medical Waste Contractor Shall: <br />1. Remove all medical wastes according to the scheduled time frame specified under <br />"Transportation of Medical Waste to Disposal Area". <br />2. Clean and disinfect each storage bin, locker and/or area; maintain designated medical <br />waste sites free of medical waste spills and any debris related to the pickup of medical <br />d waste. <br />3. Inspect all designated medical waste containers to ensure compliance with HSC, Article <br />8, commencing with Section 25080. The institution will conduct periodic inspection of <br />the storage bins and lockers and its immediate area. Contractor shall immediately correct <br />all unsanitary conditions or deficiencies as noted by institution inspections. <br />4. Provide a completed medical waste tracking document at the time of each pick-up, <br />pursuant to HSC, Article 6, Section 25063. The document shall be properly executed, <br />signed and dated by then'nr-MTA or designee and the waste hauler at each of the <br />institution locations. Only the Senior MTA or designee shall review and sign the original <br />manifest (for billing authorization) prior to shipment of medical waste. <br />
