All medical waste shall be placed into red biohazard bags labeled with the words <br />"Biohazardous Waste" or with the international symbol and word `Biohazard". These <br />bags must be impervious to moisture and have a strength sufficient to preclude ripping, <br />tearing or bursting under normal use and handling. All waste which has been placed into a <br />red bag shall be considered to be medical .waste. The bags shall be double tied to prevent <br />spillage in the event a bag is dumped upside down. Sharps containers shall be labeled <br />with the words "Sharps Waste" or with the international biohazard symbol and the word <br />"Biohazard". They shall be a rigid puncture resistant container that when sealed is leak <br />resistant not able to be reopened without great difficulty. The small red plastic bags shall <br />be located in each area generating medical waste. <br />C. Transportation of Medical Waste to Disposal Area <br />1. Biohazardous Waste shall be transported from the various generation points by <br />designated staff as required to the Infirmary Basement storage area. The designated staff <br />shall obtain a cart and place the Biohazard Disposal Containers on the cart. A large red <br />bag shall be placed inside each container as a liner. <br />2. After donning the appropriate protective clothing, the designated staff shall proceed to the <br />Biohazard Waste storage area located in the Infirmary Basement. <br />3. Staff assigned to areas generating Biohazard Waste shall tie up the small red bags <br />containing Biohazardous Waste and place the bags into an appropriate Biohazard <br />Disposal Container for pickup by the designated staff. <br />4. The Senior MTA or designee shall ensure that all Biohazard Disposal Containers are <br />closed and deliver them to the disposal shed located adjacent to the Truck Salleyport. <br />5. The Senior MTA or designee shall place the Biohazard Disposal Containers in the <br />disposal shed in a neat and orderly manner. Partially filled Biohazard Disposal Containers <br />shall be placed in front of full containers. Partially filled containers can be combined to <br />Rev 4/17/02 reduce the amount of containers being stored. <br />6. All Biohazard Disposal Containers shall be ready for pickup by the Biohazard Waste <br />Contractor on Thursday morning prior to 0600 hours. <br />7. The disposal shed(s) shall always remain locked. A key will be placed on the assigned <br />key group of the Senior MTA and/or designee and the Biohazard Waste Contractor shall <br />have a key. <br />Rev 4/17/02 8. The cart shall be cleaned after each use to prevent the spread of pathogens. <br />The Biohazard Waste Contractor shall pickup the Biohazard Waste Containers from the <br />disposal shed on Thursday. The Biohazardous Waste shall be weighed and a weight slip <br />shall be provided. <br />D. Medical Waste Storage Methods <br />1. All medical waste shall be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area <br />until transported by the Biohazardous Waste Contractor. All biohazardous waste shall be <br />stored, handled or transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting covers <br />and are kept clean and in good repair. This area shall be marked with warning signs. The <br />wording of the warning shall say in English "CAUTION- BIOHALARDOUS WASTE <br />STORAGE AREA- UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT" and in Spanish <br />
