6 a ! <br />D UEL A NAL INSTITUTION <br />NAL PROCEDURE - Medical Waste Disposal Plan <br />3 <br />n; g <br />All medical waste shall be placed into red biohazard bags labeled with the words <br />"Biohazardous Waste" or with the international symbol and word `Biohazard". These <br />bags must be impervious to moisture and have a strength sufficient to preclude ripping, <br />tearing or bursting under normal use and handling. All waste which has been placed <br />into a red bag shall be considered to be medical waste. The bags shall be double tied to <br />prevent spillage in the event a bag is dumped upside down. Sharps containers shall be <br />labeled with the words "Sharps Waste" or with the international biohazard symbol and <br />the word `Biohazard". They shall be a rigid puncture resistant container that when <br />sealed is leak resistant not able to be reopened without great difficulty. The small red <br />plastic bags shall be located in each area generating medical waste. <br />C. Transportation of Medical Waste to Disposal Area <br />Biohazardous Taste shall be collected from the various generation points by the Senior <br />MTA or designee as required. <br />2. The Senior Medical Technical Assistant or designee shall obtain a cart and an <br />appropriate number of Biohazard Disposal Containers. A large red bag shall be placed <br />inside each container as a liner. <br />After donning the appropriate protective clothing, the Senior MTA or designee shall <br />proceed to each of the Biohazard Waste pickup points. <br />4. Staff assigned to areas generating Biohazard Waste shall tie up the small red bags <br />containing Biohazardous Waste and placed the bags into an appropriate Biohazard <br />Disposal Container for pickup by the Senior MTA or designee. <br />5. When all Biohazard Waste has been collected from the various pickup points, the <br />Senior MTA or designee shall ensure that all Biohazard Disposal Containers are closed <br />and deliver them to the disposal shed located adjacent to the Truck Salleyport. <br />6. The Senior MTA or designee shall place the Biohazard Disposal Containers in the <br />disposal shed in a neat and orderly manner. Partially fill Biohazard Disposal Containers <br />shall be placed in front of full containers. Partially filled containers can be combined to <br />reduce the amount of containers being stored. <br />7. All Biohazard Disposal Containers shall be ready for pickup by the Biohazard Waste <br />Contractor on Wednesday morning prior to 0600 hours. <br />8. The disposal shed shall always remain locked. A key will be placed on the assigned key <br />group of the Senior MTA and the Biohazard Waste Contractor shall have a key. <br />The cart shall be cleaned after each use to prevent the spread of pathogens. <br />10. The Biohazard Waste Contractor shall pickup the Biohazard Waste Containers from the <br />disposal shed on Wednesday. The Biohazardous Waste shall be weighed and a weight <br />slip shall be provided. <br />D. Medical Waste Storage Methods <br />All medical waste shall be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area <br />until transported by the Biohazardous Waste Contractor. All biohazardous waste shall <br />be stored, handled or transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting <br />
