0 0 <br />California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation <br />DEUEL VOCATIONAL INSTITUTION <br />April 2007 <br />No. 157 - OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE- Medical Waste Management Plan <br />1I. Purpose and Objectives <br />To provide for the collection, storage and disposal of medical and pharmaceutical waste in a manner that <br />ensures the health and safety of all inmates, staff and the general public. <br />III. References <br />Health and Safety Code, Chapter 6.5, Sections 25117 and 25117.5; California Administrative Code, Title <br />22, Division 4, Sections 66840 and 66840, Division 5, Section 70847, Division 6, Section 72657; ACA <br />Standards 2-4259 and 24341. Health Care Services Division Policies and Procedures Volume 9, Chapter <br />16, Expiration dates and disposition of Outdated, Contaminated, Mis-Labeled, or Overstocked and Recalled <br />Medications. <br />IV. Approval and Review <br />This procedure shall be reviewed and updated annually in the month of April by the Health Care Manager <br />(HCM) and submitted to the Warden for approval. <br />V. Responsibility <br />GoThe Health Care Manager has the overall responsibility. <br />VI. Methods <br />A. Types of Medical Waste Generated: <br />Laboratory Wastes- Specimens or pathological and microbiological waste containing <br />blood or other infected materials. <br />2. Blood or Body Fluids- Liquid blood elements or other regulated body fluids, or articles <br />contaminated with blood or body fluids. <br />3. Sharps- Syringes, needles, blades, broken glass, microscope slides. <br />4. Surgical Specimens- Human tissues removed surgically or by autopsy. <br />5. Isolation Waste- Waste contaminated with excretion, exudates, or secretions from humans <br />who are isolated due to highly communicable diseases. <br />Deuel Vocational Institution (DVI) is registered as a Large Quantity Generator. The estimated monthly <br />amount of Medical Waste generated is approximately 600 pounds. The estimated monthly amount of <br />Pharmaceutical Waste generated is approximately 10 gallons. <br />B. Handling Medical Waste <br />1. Prior to handling any medical waste bags, containers or receptacles, appropriate clothing <br />0 shall be put on. Disposable gloves and aprons shall be maintained in all areas generating <br />medical waste. <br />
