0 0
HANDLING BLOOD SPILLS& OTHER POTENTIALLY INFECTIOUS MATERIALS
The following precautions contain the necessary elements for handling spills of blood or other body fluids. All
employees should already be familiar with the content of the "Spill Containment and Clean-up Kit", including the
MSDS's: IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT HOW TO CLEAN-UP A SPILL ASK FOR HELP BEFORE
GETTING INVOLVED. NOTIFY:
CENTER DIRECTOR/Infection Control Mgr ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/Back-up
Name(print):
Name(sign):
Address:
Telephone#:
Location of Kit:
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Wear the following protective clothing as appropriate to the situation:
* Impermeable gloves-2 pairs latex or nitrile gloves
* Face mask/shield combination
* Coverall (fluid impermeable with zipper front), shoe&head cover(fluid impermeable)
CLEAN-UP STEPS
1. Immediately isolate area from unauthorized personnel using barrier tape. Ensure that the biohazard bag(s)will not
leak and that they are labeled or color-coded. Place it in a manner that will facilitate discarding of clean-up
materials preventing the spread of contamination outside the bag. Use double bags for extra precautions.
2. Don the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (fluid impermeable coverall, shoe and head cover, latex
gloves, face mask/shield).
3. Contain the spread of contamination by placing absorbant material around contours or spill, or pour coagulant
powder over the spill, if available.
4. Carefully remove any items or debris from the spill area with the scoops or other device and place in the biohazard
bag. NOTE: All sharps (i.e., glass, needles, blades,...) must be picked-up using a cleaning pan and a broom and
placed in a Sharps container.
5. Carefully seep-up saturated absorbent/coagulant material with the scoops or with the cleaning pan/broom. Place
the contaminated materials in a labeled biohazard bag.
6. If cleaning a hard surface and only after all absorbent/coagulant material has been cleaned up; flood/wipe
contaminated area with an EPA approved disinfectant and allow to stand for 3 minutes or as indicated by the
manufacturer's instructions of the disinfectant used. If a bleach solution is used, dilute bleach with water to a final
concentration of 1:10. Use absorbent paper towels to clean up the disinfectant solution from the surface.
7. Place all soiled paper towels into the biohazard bag.
8. Place all NON-DISPOSABLE clean-up items (i.e., nitrile gloves , spatula, clean-up pan and broom) in a labeled
sink or bucket which reads"TO BE DECONTAMINATED". Remove the contaminated coverall followed by the
shoe covers. Dispose of these items into the biohazard bag.. Remove head cover followed by face mask/shield
and dispose of them into the biohazard bag. Next, remove gloves and place into the biohazard bag. Ensure that
your hands are free of any contamination. Wash hands with soap and water and dry. Put on the second pair of
clean nitrile gloves and place biohazard bag into a new biohazard bag. NOTE: If you use contaminated gloves,
the likelihood of contaminating other surfaces is greatly increased.
9. Use the nylon cable tie to seal the exterior biohazard bag.
10.Place the bag in the biohazardous waste storage area.
11. Decontaminate any non-disposable equipment and devices. Use EPA approved disinfectant and allow to stand for
3 minutes or as indicated by the manufacturer's instructions.
12. Replace all items that were used from the Spill Containment and Clean-up Kit so that it is ready for use.
13. Record the spill in the spill report log.
