It is the policy of Sodexo Laundry Stockton to decrease the possibility of a puncture <br />wound or cut occurrence. If such an incident occurs, prompt medical attention and <br />documentation is imperative. <br />Employees, who in the course of performing their duty sustain contact with blood or <br />body fluid from needle stick, puncture or cut, splash to the eye, nose or mouth, <br />contamination of broken or non -intact skin, must be seen by a healthcare professional <br />at the earliest possible time from exposure. <br />AIDS, HIV infection and Viral Hepatitis B can result from such exposures. If the <br />source of the blood or body fluid is not known, it must be assumed infectious for <br />Hepatitis B and HIV. <br />8.2. Procedures <br />• Stop and identify the facility the sharp was from. <br />• Place sharp object in a separate sharps container and hold for testing. If a <br />healthcare provider other than a hospital is involved make arrangements for <br />testing. Do not transport the sharp if at all possible. <br />• Provide first aid to the injured employee. <br />8.3. All Exposed <br />• Wash the affected area. <br />• Should receive a tetanus shot if not immunized within 5 years. <br />• Hepatitis B Virus Post -Exposure Management <br />8.4. Exposed Employee Unvaccinated <br />• One dose Hepatitis B immune globulin within 7 days of exposure. <br />• Initiate Hepatitis B vaccine series. <br />• Exposed Employee Vaccinated <br />• Test for antibodies to Hepatitis B. <br />• If inadequate antibodies, give 1 dose Hepatitis B vaccine booster dose. <br />8.5. HIVPost-Exposure Management <br />8.5.1. Exposure employee should receive HIV testing at: <br />• Once for baseline <br />• 4 to 6 weeks <br />• 12 weeks <br />• 6 months <br />12.09 -28- <br />
