Special precautions should be taken to prevent <br /> injuries caused by needles, scalpels, and <br /> other sharp instruments or devices during <br /> procedures : <br /> 1 . NEVER RECAP A NEEDLE. Recapping of <br /> needles is a major cause of injury. <br /> After use, needles and syringes should be <br /> discarded directly into the red plastic <br /> puncture-proof containers provided . <br /> 2 . NEVER PUT A NEEDLE DOWN - DISPOSE OF IT <br /> PROPERLY. Needles left on exam tables or <br /> counters may injure staff , patients or <br /> visitors . After use , needles must always <br /> be put into the plastic puncture proof <br /> containers . <br /> 3 . NEVER PUT NEEDLE OR OTHER SHARP <br /> INSTRUMENTS IN TRASH CANS . Housekeeping <br /> personnel may be injured by needles <br /> inappropriately placed in trash cans . <br /> 4 . NEVER LEAVE NEEDLES OR OTHER SHARP <br /> INSTRUMENTS ON DISPOSABLE TRAYS . ALWAYS <br /> TARE THESE TO THE RED PLASTIC CONTAINER. <br /> Persons disposing of trays after <br /> procedures may be injured by needles . <br /> Also , disposable trays are put into trash <br /> cans, and if needles are present, pose a <br /> risk to housekeeping personnel . <br /> 5 . NEVER PUSH A NEEDLE INTO THE RED PLASTIC <br /> NEEDLE DISPOSAL BOX WITH YOUR HAND. IF <br /> THE NEEDLE DOES NOT GO INTO THE OPENING <br /> EASILY, USE A LARGE SYRINGE TO PUSH IT <br /> IN. <br /> 6 .
