® To clean major blood or body fluid spills, each team is equipped with two
spill kits, which contain biohazard red bags. The biohazard bags are used
to dispose of all items in contact with blood or other body fluids.
■ Since running water for hand washing is not always accessible on site, use
Personal Antimicrobial Wipes (P.A.W.S.) in between blood testing. These
antimicrobial hand wipes are formulated with PCMX and SD-Alcohol to kill
germs on contact.
■ If skin has direct contact with blood or OPIM, the technician should find a
location to wash skin thoroughly with running water and soap.
■ Employees will ensure that all procedures involving blood or OPIM shall be
performed in such a manner as to minimize splashing, splattering, and
generation of droplets of these substances.
■ Examining equipment that may become contaminated with blood or OPIM in
between each use and prior to servicing or shipping such equipment as
necessary.
4.4 Engineering Controls
® New technology for workplace sharps will be evaluated and implemented
whenever possible to further prevent accidental needle sticks and cuts.
■ Engineering controls (i.e., sharps containers, plastic coated capillary tubes)
will be inspected and maintained or replaced by the Team Manager every
week.
■ Puncture-resistant sharps containers will be used to dispose of all sharps
and materials saturated with blood or OPIM. Larger materials exposed with
blood or OPIM will be put into a sealed red biohazard bag. Both sharps
containers and red bags are properly labeled "biohazard".
■ Remove any broken sharps with a broom and dust pan.
4.5 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): PPE must be used if work practice and
engineering controls do not completely eliminate the exposure hazard. PPE helps
prevents occupational exposure to infectious materials. PPE is considered
appropriate only if it prevents blood or bodily fluids from passing through or reaching
the employee's work clothes, street clothes, undergarments, skin, eyes, mouth, or
other mucous membranes under normal conditions of use and for the duration of time
for which the protective equipment will be used.
■ Life Line Screening will provide gloves, eye protection, face masks and clean-up
gowns at no cost to employees.
® Technicians will use new gloves for each new blood test and any time
contact with blood or OPIM is anticipated (during clean-up and
decontamination). Latex-free gloves will be available for technicians and/or
participants with a latex-allergy.
■ Disposable gloves shall be replaced immediately if they are torn,
punctured, or otherwise unable to function as an "exposure barrier."
■ Protective safety glasses will be worn during blood testing.
■ Face masks will be worn during spill clean-up.
® Any garment penetrated by blood or other potentially infectious materials
shall be removed immediately, or as soon as possible.
■ Remove all personal protective equipment before leaving the work area.
