The purpose of this database is to provide a comprehensive list of known SWMUs,
potential SWMUs, and Areas of Concern (ADCs). A SWMU is defined as any discernable
waste management unit at a RCRA facility from which a hazardous constituent may
migrate, irrespective of whether the unit was intended for the management of
solid/hazardous wastes. Examples include, surface impoundments, waste piles, land
treatment units, landfills, containers, tanks, incinerators, injection wells, recycling
units, waste water treatment units, and others generally exempted from standards
applicable to hazardous waste management units. This definition also includes areas
contaminated by routine, systematic, and deliberate discharges from process areas.
(RCRA Facility Assessment Guidance documnt, Permits and State Programs Division,
Office of Solid Waste U. S. Environmental Protection Agency,1986.)
Potential SWMUs, as used in this database, are areas that may have been used for
storage and/or disposal of hazardous wastes from which a hazardous constituent may
migrate, irrespective of whether the unit was intended for the management of
solid/hazardous wastes.
Areas of Concern (ADCs), as used in this database, are areas that are referenced
in previous reports or on maps that may have contributed to soil or groundwater
contamination.
The symbols used in each column of the database are explained below.
A#3 Area of concem number 3
S#3 Solid waste management unit number 3
PS#3 Potential solid waste management unit number 3
Unit/Am
SWMU Solid Wste Managemnt Unit
SWMU?
