•
Mr. Robert 0. Godwin - - 19 June 1987
2. Drywells 801, 827B, 835, 8366, 850, and 8516 have been closed but we need
wastewater characterization, well construction details, results of any soil
samples taken, and detailed closure procedures for each of these wells to
determine if they pose a threat to water quality.
3. Closed GSA drywell 874-N and active drywell 810 require wastewater
characterizations.
By 17 July 1987, please submit work plans and time schedules for the work
described above.
By telephone on 15 May 1987, Ms. Judy Steenhoven of your staff informed Ms.
Wendy Cohen of my staff about a newly-discovered contamination problem at Site
300 at Building 815. Trichloroethylene (TCE) apparently was used at this
building periodically to clean the boiler and leaked or spilled from drums. Ms.
Steenhoven said TCE has been found in soil and in the regional ground water
aquifer at 100 feet deep (the shallow perched zone was not tested). By 17 July
1987, please submit all data from soil borings and well installation at this
site ( including boring and well logs.) and a work -plan and time schedule to
determine the extent of soil and ground water contamination. Please also
provide information on the source of contamination, whether or not TCE is still
used, and what precautions have been taken to prevent spills or leaks in the
future.
If you have any questions, please call Ms. Cohen at (916) 361-5676.
KENNETH D.
