• i
lLawrence Livermore National Laboratory
April 16, 1987
ENVIROMENTAL HEALTH
Dr. Jogi Khanna FERMIT/SERVICES,
San Joaquin Local Health District
1601 East Hazelton Avenue
P.O. Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
SUBJECT: Site 300 - Calderon Testing of Inactive Landfills
Dear Dr. Khanna:
Pursuant to your letter dated February 20, 1987, we have enclosed "Screening
Questionnaires" for inactive solid waste disposal sites at Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory - Site 300, based on information in our files. A general
location map (Figure 1 ) and a disposal site location map (Figure 2) are
enclosed. The inactive sites are commonly designated as Pits 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8
and 9. There are also two active sites, designated Pits 1 and 7, which have
been included with this submittal to clarify the status of all sites.
Site 300 is a high-explosives test facility and the disposal sites received
firing table debris consisting of construction debris and gravel that may have
been contaminated with depleted uranium, beryllium, and lesser quantities of
thorium. Also, Pits 3, 4, and 5 received some tritium contaminated components
prior to 1978. Recent analyses also show lead and barium in the landfilled
gravel. Pit 6 received animal wastes and carcasses, and assorted scrap metal
and waste chemicals. These solid waste disposal sites are regulated by the
California Regional Water Quality Control Board - Central Valley Region, and a
copy of their Order No. 80-184 is enclosed. Active landfills are also
regulated by the Department of Health Services by Interim Status Document
CA2890090002.
Because of the remoteness of the disposal sites and the characteristic
"demolition" - type wastes, it is anticipated that there are no significant
impacts from any of the sites via the air pathway. Radionuclides have not
been detected above the ground, although tritium has been detected in the
groundwater in the Pit 3 and 5 area. There are on-going studies of the
groundwater impacts, which are reported to the Regional Board. As part of the
groundwater investigation, borehole gases have been analyzed for radionuclides
at Pits #3 and #5, and tritium was detected at extremely low concentrations.
The purpose of the borehole gas analysis was to attempt to locate areas of
subsurface tritium concentrations.
An Equal Opportunity Employer-University of California-PQ Box 808 Livenwe,California 94550-Telephone(415)422-1100*Twx 910-386-8339 UCLLL LVMR
