Subsurface contamination of the Equinoa property was 'estimated at
approximately 3 acres, with contamination to a depth of approximately 3 feet. A sample
of the white, friable material was submitted to the EAL Corporation in Richmond,
California for analysis by polarized light microscopy and determined to be 10-20 percent
chrysotile asbestos (9).
3.1.2 Cal EPA DTSC Sampling
Cal EPA DTSC conducted sampling at the Equina site on April 16, 1986 (4). Four samples
of white friable material were collected from surface deposits on-site; a background
sample of off-site soil from the border of Wolfe Road was also collected. The on-site
samples were all found by polarized light microscopy to be composed of 30 percent (+/-
10 percent) chrysotile asbestos and 3 percent (+/- 2 percent) crocidolite asbestos. The
background sample was found to contain no asbestos (detection limit 0.5 percent) (4).
Page 10
URS Consultants, Inc.
