N , 9
I
Mr. Doug Wilson
September 8, 1992
Page Two
2. In order to ensure that sterilization of each load of infectious
waste has been achieved according to current regulations, a log
shall be kept showing that each of the following parameters have
been met:
a) 2500 F has been maintained for 30 minutes according to the
circular graph records after completion of each steriliza-
tion cycle.
b) the temperature indicator on each autoclaveable bag has
turned the appropriate color; the indicator strip may be
of two types - the band on the bag which turns brown, or
externally applied tape which becomes striped with dark
brown (or black) stripes.
After it has been noted that each parameter has been met, the load
may be compacted into the regular garbage bin. If any parameter has
not been met, the load shall be rejected and not compacted. It
shall be retrieved. No further loads shall be sterilized until the
problem has been resolved.
These actions are based on our initial evaluation. On-going assessment will
occur and adjustments made based on newer information and technologies to
further improve the handling and treatment of infectious waste.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Sincerely yours,
DAMERON HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION
/V
i a nowles, R. ., M.S., C.I C.
Nurse Epidemiologist
LK:af
Enclosure
cc: Ron Valinoti, Environmental Health Division
Kasey Foley, Environmental Health Division
Stephen Chen, City of Stockton
Luis Arismendi, M.D, Dameron Hospital Association
Mark Koenig, Dameron Hospital Association
Margaret Parrott, Dameron Hospital Association
