DO-MESTIC FLIES
Ely Qdjj Survey
The performance standards specify that 114Y grill surveys are to be conducted weekly to obtain
a fly grill survey value. For each fly grill survey, ten separate fly grill counts are taken on the
active (working) face, after which the !--ve highest fly counts are averaged to obtain the survey
value (fly index) for the survey. Fly grail surveys should be made during times when adult flies
generally are active (i.e., during daylight hours when shade temperatures are between 50 to 105
degrees Fahrenheit and when it is not raining or excessively windy). A suggested form for
recording the counts and the attractant and environmental conditions required by Section 17683a-
2-(d) is attached.
The fly counts are obtained by utilizing a Scudder fly grill. This device is a square grid
constructed of 24 wooden slats, each 3 feet by 3/4 inch. placed 3/4 inch apart on a "T' shaped
framework. A schematic plan for constructing a fly grill is attached. The completed grill can
be hinged in the middle to fold-up for transport.
The following recommendations for c1noosing the specific count locations and obtaining the
counts are based on observations of fly occu u—,ence at landfill sites and fly grill survey techniques
which have been utilized by past investigators In residential and agricultural areas. The counts
should be made on areas of the active race where the wastes contain putrescible materials. It
is recommended that the counts be made along the lower edge of the active face and that the
inspector walk on the earth surface nex: to the wastes as much as possible. Short incursions into
the wastes may be necessary to make -_ count, but the inspector should return to the edge when
moving to the next count location. C I vnndy days, an edge of wastes most sheltered from the
wind should be chosen. If possible. ::,e edge or edges of the wastes chosen for the ten counts
should be located away from dump-ng trucks or moving compacting equipment.
After the general area for making :he ten counts is determined, the inspector must choose the
specific location for each of the -en fly grill counts. It is recommended that about 30 to
50 linear feet of wastes be viewer before choosing a spot for the first count. The first count is
then make on an attractant which is Judged to have the greatest number of domestic flies
gathered upon it. Subsequent locations for the remaining nine counts should be at least 10 feet
apart but not more than 36 feet apart. When possible, attractant locations where flies are visibly
present snouid be seiected for inui piac_o.menc.
In order tom a count, the fly grill is dropped carefully over the selected attractant from a
height of about 3 or 4 inches, so as to briefly disturb the flies. It should rest parallel to the
waste stream, and should not be held up by obstructions more than 6 inches above the attractant.
the count is begun after a brief wait (one to two seconds)
The count should be-made and completed within the next 30-second time period. During the
count the inspector should not cast a shadow over the fly grill or otherwise disturb the flies. If
MMO-1174ALTO OV B-2
