f • •
BUR
LEVINE• FRICKE
September 26, 2001 PP, Q,: 5 9 7979.00-002
Mr. Robert McClellon
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division
304 East Webber Avenue, 3rd Floor
Stockton, California 95202
Subject: Third Quarter 2001 Soil Gas Monitoring Report, Austin Road Landfill, San Joaquin ,
County, California
Dear Mr. McClellon:
This letter report presents results of soil gas monitoring conducted by LFR Levine-Fricke (LFR) on
behalf of Allied Waste Industries at the Austin Road Landfill in San Joaquin County during the
third quarter of 2001. Allied Waste Industries has retained LFR to conduct quarterly soil gas and
water quality monitoring at the Austin Road Landfill.
Procedures
Concentrations of methane, oxygen, and carbon dioxide in soil gas were monitored using a Landtec
GEM 2000 gas analyzer (GEM) and extraction monitor. After checking the calibration of the
GEM, a reading of ambient air in the vicinity of the probe being tested was recorded before soil
gas was monitored at each probe. The GEM was attached to the soil gas probe valve and air was
extracted by the GEM's internal pump. Readings for methane and oxygen were monitored for at
least five minutes or until the readings stabilized. The readings were recorded and the soil gas
probe valve was closed. Soil gas monitoring was conducted at each of the soil gas probe locations
presented in Figure 1 on August 2, 2001.
Resu Its
As shown in Table 1, methane was not detected above its lower explosive limit in any of the soil
gas probes at Austin Road Landfill during the third quarter of 2001.
The GEM displayed 0.0 percent by volume for methane at all the soil gas probes monitored during
the August 2001 monitoring event. Oxygen readings in soil gas probes ranged from 8.9 percent by
volume (SGP-2A) to 20.4 percent by volume (SGP-9A). Carbon dioxide reading ranged from 0.9
percent by volume (SGP-10B) to 4.4 percent by volume (SGP-2A). These data are consistent with
previous soil gas data at this site.
4080CavittStal[man Road,Suite 100,Granite Bay,California 95746-9460 , (916)786-0320 • fax(916)786-0366 • www.ifr.com
1tr-ARlrsoi1_9as-3Q2001.doc:DMS Offices Otdrsafetw i d e
