BUR
LEVINE•FRICKE
May 22, 2001 7979.00-002
Mr. Robert McClellon
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division [,',;AY 2 5 7 101
304 East Webber Avenue, 3rd Floor
Stockton, California 95202
Subject: First Quarter 2001 Soil-Gas Monitoring Report, Austin Road Landfill, San Joaquin
County, California
Dear Mr. McClellon:
This letter report presents results of soil-gas monitoring conducted at the Austin Road Landfill in
San Joaquin County during the first quarter of 2001, conducted by LFR Levine-Fricke (LFR) on
behalf of Allied Waste Industries. Allied Waste has retained LFR to conduct environmental
monitoring at the Austin Road Landfill. Soil-gas monitoring is conducted quarterly at the Austin
Road Landfill. The Austin Road Landfill began receiving solid waste on January 8, 2001.
Procedures
Soil-gas measurements were collected using a Landtec GEM 2000 gas analyzer and extraction
monitor. A reading of ambient air in the vicinity of the probe to be tested was recorded before soil
gas was measured at each probe. The GEM 2000 analyzer was attached to the soil-gas probe and
gas was extracted by the internal pump of the device. Readings for methane and oxygen were
monitored for at least five minutes or until the readings stabilized. The readings were recorded and
the well was closed.
Results
Methane and oxygen measurements were collected at Austin Road Landfill on March 5, 2001. Soil-
gas probe locations are shown on Figure 1. Monitoring results are presented in Table 1.
The gas analyzer read between 0.0 and 1.0 percent volume for methane for all the soil-gas probes
measured during the March event. Methane was recorded at 1.0 percent at soil-gas probe SGP-2A.
A reading of 0.0 percent oxygen was recorded at this probe. Oxygen at soil-gas probes SGP-13
and SGP-14 was measured at reduced levels of 6.8 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively, during
the first quarter of 2001.
1900 Powell Street, 12th Floor, Emeryville, California 94608-1827 • (510) 652-4500 • fax (510) 652-2246 • www.Ifr.com
Offices Worldwide
