MAXIMUM EXTENT OF LANDFILL REQUIRING CLOSURE
Since the landfill will be developed in modules, the maximum
extent of the landfill that wil require closure at any
given time is estimated to be 0 acres The maximum extent of
closure would occur when one 20 a module has been filled, the
next 20 acre module has begun to accept waste, and a third module
has been partially excavated (10 acres) . In this case, the first
module would need final cover, the second module would need to be
filled to natural ground level and final covered, and the third
module would need to be refilled with soil.
STRUCTURE REMOVAL
Landfill structures (Figure 3) consist of a main gatehouse (about
100 sq. ft. ) , a maintenance building (3000 sq. feet) , and a
foreman's residence (1500 sq. ft. ) . All concrete foundations,
flooring, and pads will be removed after final closure (estimated
at the year 2062) . It is uncertain, at this time, whether any
of the structures will be salvaged for use elsewhere.
DECOMMISSIONING ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS
Any gas wells or probes which may have been installed inside or
adjacent to landfill structures will be filled and sealed with
bentonite upon removal of the structures. The perimeter
monitoring devices, the groundwater monitoring network, and the
leachate collection and removal system will remain intact and
maintained for the 30 year postclosure monitoring period. After
the monitoring period has expired, all monitoring device wells
will be decommissioned to comply with County ordinances and state
regulations. Drainage controls will remain to prevent ponding
and leachate production after closure.
SITE SECURITY
Sixty days prior to the closure of the site, a sign stating the
date of closure and alternative waste disposal site will be
posted at the point of access. The sign will remain at least 180
days after the last waste shipment. Also, a notice will be
placed in a local newspaper containing the information above.
Within ten days following the last waste shipment, a sign will be
posted at the access point indicating a local or toll free
telephone number for emergency notification and where the
closure/postclosure plans are kept and can be viewed. Also, the
12
