V
Test Series 2
Normal Stress Shear Plane Observations
4000 psf GCL traveled with the
Intemal in the soil geomembrane. Sheared soil had
fallen over the rear of the bottom
box.
GCL traveled with the
8000 psf Intemal in the soil geomembrane. Sheared soil had
fallen over the rear of the bottom
box.
GCL traveled with the
13000 psf geomembrane. Sheared soil had
Internal in the GCL and the soil fallen over the rear of the bottom
box. GCL had sheared
internally.
RESULTS
The normal stresses were graphed against the shear stresses and linear regression was applied to obtain
the best fit straight line. The y-intercept describes the adhesion value of the interface, and the arctan of
the slope of the line provides the friction angle. The results are provided in the following tables and
graphs. Because the GCL sheared internally on the 13000 psf normal stress of test series 2, the
interpretation of the residual is left for the engineers of the project.
Jinn Matthews
'N 11
Research Technician
National Seal Company
