Interpretation of SGI Interface Shear Strength Test Results
Foothill Sanitary Landfill - Area 2A Liner System
Page 5
8/4/15
The use of the post -peak strength envelope from the critical interface, i.e., GM/GC, is confirmed
by Multi -Interface Test Series 5, which yielded essentially the same post -peak strength envelope
as the single interface tests on the GM/GC interface. In other words, the GCL/FLS interface did
not fail before the GM/GC interface in the multi -interface test so the lower post -peak strength
envelope for the GCL/FLS was not mobilized in the multi -interface tests. As a result, the
GCL/FLS interface strength envelope should not be used for sideslope liner design as described
by Stark and Choi (2004).
8000
71000
'F moo
sow

4000
3000
m
a 2000
1000
0
sWo
21xIo
6(W
ra 5000
4(x)0
a 3000
a
0 2000
1000
0
Sideslope Peak interface Strengths
Series 1- GCl.f1iS
Serie< 2 - GM; G€I
^^-Seri es 3 - GM/G(
^^• Sedes 5 - Sidedope Multiple
0 2WQ 4000 6000 8000 10000 1200 14000
Normal Stress (psf)
Sides#ope Post -Peak interface Strengths
series 1 c:,cl./rls
Series2 GMfGCL
--4—Series3-Gh17GC
--+--Se6es 5- Sideslope Multiple
--ate
0 2000 4000 6(W 8000 10000 120WW VZOO
Normal Stress (pst)
(b)
5
