The sides and top of the 48 inch vertical riser extending above the ash waste
were strengthened with a minimum of 12 inches of steel reinforced concrete.
An opening was cut on the southern side of the vertical riser to accommodate a
36 inch diameter concrete riser, positioned horizontally, to allow access from
outside the waste management unit to the vertical riser and bottom collection
sump. A foundation built from compacted ash was constructed between the
vertical riser and the southern berm to support the 36 inch extension riser.
The riser was placed on the ash foundation and sloped at about 1.5% to the
south to allow drainage of condensate. A steel locking door was attached to
the outside end of the extension riser to prevent unauthorized access to the
leachate collection sump.
Future construction on the Forward Ash Pit will involve building a sidewall
liner along the existing western wall and extending the bottom clay liner and
bottom leachate collection system. Vertical expansion will continue as needed
along the southem and eastern berms of the ash pit, although no additional
expansion is scheduled at this time.
