TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM
Page 5
June 3, 1992
SAC31583.AC.ZZ
boring logs reflect these ASTM standards. Pocket penetrometer tests were conducted on
most cohesive samples. Samples were then prepared for storage by placing representative
portions in plastic bags or by sealing the sampling tube with plastic cap. and tape. Sample
descriptions, blow counts recorded during the SPT, and other relevant information were
recorded on the soil boring logs. These logs are presented in Appendix I.
Laboratory Testing
Laboratory tests to determine pertinent index and engineering properties omseleetted=soil
samples were performed by Harding Lawson Associates of Concord, California. Laboratory_
test results are presented in Appendix II.
Indextests included determining the amount of material in the soil sample,,bnser-than. the
number 200 sieve, and determining the liquid limit, plastic limit, and moisture content of
selected,- samples. The results of these tests are listed in Table II -1, in Appendix II.
Engineering property tests included unconsolidated -undrained (UU) triaxial compression
tests 'and consolidation tests. Results of these tests are also suminarized in. Table II -1.
Interpretation
Geology
Based on a review of the geology section of the Comprehensive Landfill Description (CH2M
HILL 1992), sediments at the site consist of marine clays, silts, .aud. sands -that ..are
approximately 5,250 feet thick under the site. For additional discussion on geology, refer to
the'Geology subsection of the Comprehensive Landfill Description_
Seismicity
Based on a review of the Comprehensive Landfill Description for Forward Landfill, there
are no major faults that transect the landfill area. Based on a seismicity study performed by
Kleinfelder (October 1987), the Comprehensive Landfill Description also reports a maximum
peak bedrock acceleration of 0.18g at the site. This peak bedrock acceleration corresponds
to a Richter Magnitude 7 Maximum Credible Earthquake along the Midland fault, which is
located approximately 24 miles from the site. Refer to the Comprehensive Landfill
Description report (CH2M HILL, 1992) for additional discussion of the area faults and the
