n <br />u <br />• <br />Volatile Organic Solvents <br />Volatile organic solvents include a wide variety of chemicals, from <br />petroluem distillates such as Stoddard solvent, to chlorinated <br />hydrocarbons, such as trichloroethene. Volatile organic solvents <br />generally are liquid at room temperature and often have an aromatic <br />odor. <br />A small number of chlorinated volatile organic solvents have been <br />classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as probable <br />or possible carcinogens. In this group are such chemicals as <br />trichloroethene and perchloroethene. <br />The most common possible adverse health effect from short-term <br />exposure to volatile organic solvents ,s -,:central nervous---s-ys=test <br />depression. <br />There is no PEL specific to volatile organic solvents. <br />61 <br />
