SECTION 5
U FU-03 Containment ste
WMU F-West Leachate Impoundment
The WMU FU-03 containment system consists of a liner and LCRS on the base of the unit and a side
slope liner and LCRS on the western and southern excavation slopes. The northern slope
incorporates an interface liner to separate Class III wastes from the former Austin Road Landfill from
the overlying Class II wastes to be placed in WMU FU-03.
The base liner system, from bottom to top,consists of the following:
• Prepared subgrade;
• Minimum 2-foot thick compacted clay liner with a maximum field hydraulic conductivity of I x
10-7 cm/sec;
• 60-mil, double-sided textured HDPE geomembrane liner;
• Cushion geotextile;
• One-foot thick blanket gravel and pipe network drainage layer with a minimum hydraulic
conductivity of 0.1 cm/sec;
• Nonwoven geotextile filter fabric;
• One-foot thick protective operations layer.
The side slope and interface liner system, from bottom to top, consists of:
• Prepared subgrade (for excavated slopes) or approximately 4-ft thick foundation layer (for
interface liner);
• Needlepunched reinforced geosynthetic clay liner(GCL);
• 60-mil, single-sided textured HDPE geomembrane(textured side placed against GCL);
• Geocomposite drainage net(GDN);
• One-foot thick protective operations layer to be placed concurrently with waste placement
(maximum height of operations layer at any given time is 10 feet above refuse level).
The WMU F-West leachate impoundment liner system,from top to bottom,consists of the
following:
• Prepared subgrade;
• Needle-punched, reinforced geosynthetic clay liner(GCL);
FORWARD LANDFILL WMU F-03 AND F-WEST DESIGN REPORT
5-1
