GEOSYNTEC CONSULTANTS
Dr. Hari Sharma, P.E., G.E.
22 January 2001
Page 5
histories that fill the envelope between the median and 84`h percentile response spectra
for the design event.
GeoSyntec developed median and 84`h percentile acceleration response
spectra for both the MW 6.4 MPE and MW, 6.7 MCE events on the Great Valley blind
thrust system and the MPE/MCE M,r 7.9 event on the San Andreas fault system using
the Abrahamson and Silva [1997] attenuation model. These acceleration response
spectra, referred to herein as the "target spectra," are shown in Figure 2 for the M"6.7
MCE event on the Great Valley blind thrust system, in Figure 3 for the MW 6.4 MPE
event on the Great Valley blind thrust system, and in Figure 4 for the M,v 7.9 MPE/MCE
event on the San Andreas fault system.
Based on the above outlined screening criteria, GeoSyntec selected the
following four accelerograms for design considerations at the Forward Landfill site:
the 270-degree component of the Saratoga-Aloha Avenue record
from the MW 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake;
• the 315-degree component of the Santa Teresa Hills record from the
M,v 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake;
the 360-degree component of the Corralitos-Eureka Canyon Road
record from the M,r 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake; and
the Magnitude 8+ synthetic accelerogram generated by Seed and
Idriss [1969] to simulate a distant large-magnitude event on the San
,Andreas fault.
The Saratoga-Aloha Avenue, Santa Teresa Hills, and Corralitos-Eureka
Canyon Road records from the M,,,6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake were selected to
represent the MW 6.4 WE and M,, 6.7 MCE events on the Great Valley blind thrust
system.
