During seasonal or other extended shutdowns, all exposed surfaces shall be protected as detailed in Article 3.1 of this Section. In addition, the GDM shall be protected from any contamination that reduces the hydraulic conductivity. Any contaminated materials shall be removed and replaced at no cost to the OWNER. 3.12 GEOTEXTILE A. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall place geotextile around coarse gravel and above granular drainage material layer in accordance with Section 02771, GEOTEXTILES, of these Specifications. 3.13 PROTECTIVE OPERATIONS LAYER A. General Requirements: 1. Protective Operations Layer shall be constructed of generally sandy materials excavated onsite and shall be placed and compacted to the lines and grades shown on the Construction Drawings or as required by the QA/QC CONSULTANT. 2. Place protective operations to a height of approximately 10-ft (measured vertically from the base) on lined slopes. 3. If any portion of the materials placed as Protective Operations Layer does not meet the specified requirements, the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall remove such material and replace it with materials meeting the Specification at no additional cost to the OWNER. 4. The constructed Protective Operations Layer shall be maintained to meet the requirements of this Specification until final completion and acceptance of the Work. This shall include all measures to prevent erosion. During seasonal or other extended shutdowns, all exposed surfaces shall be protected with special treatments specified in Article 3.1, PROTECTION OF EXPOSED SURFACES, above. 5. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall repair any geotextile or GDN damaged during fill placement at no cost to the OWNER. 6. Additional cover of Protective Operations Layer shall be provided over the granular drainage material encapsulating the HDPE piping. For crossing points, the area above the perforated leachate collection pipe shall be covered with a minimum of 2.5 feet of Protective Operations Layer. 7. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall notify the OWNER at least 3 working days in advance of when a layer is completed and ready for as-built surveys. The OWNER will perform the as-built survey of the top of the Protective Operations Layer to determine that the required minimum thickness has been achieved. The survey shall be performed in accordance with Section 01410, SURVEYS, and shall provide coordinates and elevations of the surface at the established 75-foot grid and delineating prominent features such as the edge of GDM.
