Unless otherwise describe in the manufacturer's installation instructions, each gabion
shall be assembled by tying or fastening all untied edges. The binding wire shall be
tightly looped around every other mesh opening along the seams in such a manner that
single and double loops are alternated. The wire fastener shall be applied at
approximately 4- to 6-inch intervals. A minimum of two fasteners per 1 foot, three
fasteners per 1.5 feet, and six fasteners per 3-foot vertical or horizontal edge seam are
required.
A line of empty gabions, with joints staggered, shall be placed into position according to
the Contract Drawings. Binding wire or wire fasteners shall be used to secure each unit
to the adjoining one along the vertical reinforced edges and the top selvedges. An
approved corner closure tool shall be used to adjoin adjacent gabions to insure a tight,
neat seam and minimize gabion wire join deformation. The base of the empty gabions
placed on top of a filled line gabions shall be tightly wired or fastened to the latter at front
and back. The lid shall be secured with an approved closure tool to insure proper closure
without excessive mesh deformation.
B. Gabions
1. Tiers: Set tiers of assembled gabion units at locations and to lines and grades
shown on the drawings. Each tier shall be set in place, laced, filled with rock
filler, and approved by the Engineer before lids are laced down and successive
tiers are placed.
2. Diaphragms: Where the length of the gabion exceeds its horizontal width, the
gabion shall be equally divided by diaphragms, of the same mesh and gauge as
the body of the gabions, into cells the length of which does not exceed the
horizontal width. Diaphragms shall be tied on the vertical sides. Use lacing wire
to join adjacent baskets together.
3. Interconnections: Interconnect gabions and check alignment carefully before
placing rock filler.
4. Tie Wires: Vertical gabion cells that will remain exposed after completion of
backfilling operations shall be furnished with internal tie wires perpendicular to
the exposed faces, as shown on the drawings. Partially fill the gabion basket to
the level where the tie wires shall be installed, install the tie wires equally spaced
according to basket dimensions, and carefully continue filling to avoid
dislodging, breaking, or bending the tie wires.
5. Basket Completion: When filling is complete, bend lids over to close the basket
and secure lid firmly by lacing shut with connecting wires. The completed
gabion structure shall be within +3 inches of the top elevations shown on the
drawings. The surface alignment, including bulges, shall not vary more than 3
inches.
FORWARD LANDFILL 02645
g MISCELLANEOUS CIVIL IMPROVEMENTS
