PAGE 05
Molded Butt FuAlon Fittings
Poly Pipe's Butt Fusion Fittings are manufactured in compliance with ASTM D3261 (Standard Specifications For
Butt Fusion Polyethylene Fittings). Measurement is done in accordance with ASTM D2122.
A combination of D3261 and D2122 in paraphrased form is shown below. This paraphrased form is meant to be
used only as a guideiine; specific data and ASTM Specifications should be obtained directly from. ASTM.
1. Outside diameter measurements are to be taken 1/4" from end of fitting. The measurements may be made
with micrometers, vernier or dial calipers, specially made tapered sleeve gauges, or circumferential wrap
tapes. Of these instruments, the circumferential wrap tape is ttvought to be the most accurate and easiest to
use. If micrometers or calipers are used, a minimum of 6 -measurements must be taken to assure a true
average diameter can be determined. Once the average diameter)i determined, compare the results
against the tables in 03261 for outside diameter tolerances.
2. Wall thickness measurements are to be made with a cylindrical anvil tubular micrometer at a minimum of 6
locations to assure the wail minimum and maximum thicknesses have been found. Compare these results
against the tables in D3261 for wall thickness tolerances.
3. Out of round tolerances are not found in D3261 for butt fusion fittings. However, the industry generally ac•
cepts the out of round tolerances for pipe found in ASTM 02513 (Standard Specifications for Gas Pressure
Piping Systems) as also applicable to butt fusion fittings. if out of roundness is to be checked on butt fusion
fittings, it should be done in the same manner as prescribed for roundable pipe in D2513 and D2122,
which instructs as follows (paraphased):
3 A. Place the fitting in the manufacturer's recommended re -rounding equipment, such as the clamping
devices of a butt fusion machine, and tighten the clamps to achieve as much re -rounding as tan be
accomplished.
3 B. Using a micrometer, calipers, or similar measuring instruments, take a minimum of•6 measurements
to assure the minimum and maximum outside diameters have been found.
3 C. Subtract the measured minimum diameter from the maximum. The difference is the actual out of
round condition. Compare those results against the tables in 02513 for out of roundness.
Note: All measurements are to be made at or near 73°F(2.3°C).
Physical Data and Compatibility
Poly Pipe's Polyethylene Fusion Fittings fully Comply with the requirements of ASTM D2513 and API 15LE.
Socket Fusion Fittings are manufactured in compliance with ASTM 02683, and Butt Fusion Fittings are manufac•
tured in compliance with ASTM 03261,
Poly Pipe's PE Fittings are molded from pre -blended virgin resins in accordance with the material specificlitions
listed in ASTM D1248. Poly Pipe's PE2406 fittings are molded from a Type li, Class B, Category 5, Grade P•23/24
resin with a cell classification of 234433E as stated in ASTM D3350 and are compatible for heat fusion with any
pipe manufactured from a like or similar resin. Poly Pipe's PE3408 fittings are molded from a Type III, Class C,
Category 5, Grade P-34 resin with a cell classification of 345434C stated in ASTM D3350 and are compatible for
heat fusion with any pipe manufactured from a like or similar resin.
Heat Fusion
For correct heat fusion procedure consult Poly Pipe's manual on "Recommended Heat Fusion Joining
Procedures."
h-(
