CLs were exceeded for one or more monitoring parameters in samples from eight wells.
In accordance with the RPCMP,wells with exceedances of CLs will be resampled in
May 2006 during the second quarter 2006 sampling event and a second sample will be
collected in June 2006. The retest results will be submitted to the DISC and RWQCB
under separate cover. Historically, similar exceedances of CLs have been measured and
verified in samples collected from DMP monitoring wells at the Forward Unit, followed
by no release demonstrations (NRD),which have concluded that the CL exceedances are
likely the result of naturally occurring conditions and therefore not indicative of a release
from the Forward Landfill.
Methane was measured at concentrations up to 60 percent in probe GP-12 during the first
quarter 2006. In response to elevated methane concentrations,Forward is currently
installing additional landfill gas extraction wells, and working to optimize the efficiency
of the landfill gas extraction system.
3.0 AUSTIN UNIT
3.1 WATER QUALITY MONITORING
3.1.1 Sampling and Laboratory Analyses
The Austin Unit's DMP and CAP groundwater monitoring wells and surface water
monitoring stations were sampled by BAS on February 1 and 2, 2006. Prior to collection
of samples,depth-to-water measurements were recorded in the groundwater monitoring
wells. Of note, the flush mounted protective cover for offsite well AMW-18 has been
damaged and buried by grading activities and the well could not be located for sampling.
Survey coordinates are proposed to attempt to locate and repair this well. In addition,
well AMW-5 was not sampled this quarter due to an inoperable pump, which was pulled
for repair.
A single sample set was collected from each sampling point and submitted to BC for
analysis of the parameters stipulated in RWQCB Order No. R5-2003-0049. Table 2-1
presents the monitoring schedule and summarizes the analytical methods utilized during
the current monitoring period. Water quality samples were also analyzed in the field for
dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature, specific conductance, and pH and recorded on
well data sheets. The groundwater monitoring wells, surface water monitoring points,
and leachate(sampled monthly)were sampled in accordance with the sampling and
analysis procedures detailed in Appendix B. The well data sheets, raw laboratory data,
certificates of analyses, and chain-of-custody records related to the sampling program are
included in Appendix C. The results of both field and laboratory analyses are
summarized in Tables 3-1 through 3-5.
D:\2003_021\FomardAustin_w06.docW/20/2006
9 Geologic Associates
