use
e • analyze the effect of difterential settlement
landfill.underneath the proposed vertical of an existing
ELASTIC • eVERTICALEXPANSION
SYSTEM DESIGN
Dill -n* Settlement Mechanism Differential settlement in a vertical expansion liner syster
takes place when the surrounding waste in the existing landfill moves toward and, in the extrem
case, fills in the void created* by the degradation of a large object such as a large househol,
appliance. A model was developed to analyze this mechanism, as shown on Figure 1. In thi
model, soil and waste are represented by a half space medium.. Surface differential settlement
in the model are influenced by the following factors:
• Engineering properties. of the medium;
• The thickness of the medium over the void (T);
• The containment liner system grade (cx); and
• The void size (length L x width I y x depth D). -
To quantify the influence of these factors on surface deformation, an influence functiot
is first developed. The differential settlement can then be calculated and evaluated with thc
influence function.
I The following sections describe the approach, assumptions and procedures used in the
application of the elastic solution model, to the design of a liner constructed for the vertiea>
expansion of an existing landfill.
Figure 1 Differential settlement model - three dimensional
Elastic Solution Model
Geosynfttics'93 - Vancouver, Canada - 1501
