7.0 Sample Numbering, Handling, and Preservation
Tl Sample Numbering
Samples will be numbered using the sample date, type of analyte, station/site number, and media
identification number. The sample date will be the date on which the sampling medium was
placed into the sampler.
7.2 Sample Handling
All sampling media will be inspected for physical integrity and evidence of damage before being
deployed in the field. All samples will be placed in packaging, sealed, labeled, and stored in
secured locations per the reference method. The sample number, project name, and sampler
name will be recorded on the sample label. After collection, samples will be sorted properly
until shipment. The samples will be shipped to the analytical laboratory within 24 hours.
7.2.1 Analysis Request/Chain-of Custody Form
Documentation with COC provides a record of each sample and the individuals responsible for
sample collection, shipment, and receipt. A sample is considered in custody if it meets the
following criteria:
I
• In a person's actual possession
• In view after being in physical possession
Sealed so that no one can tamper with it after having been in physical custody, or in a
secured area, restricted to authorized personnel "
Sample collection custody is initiated by field personnel upon collection of samples. Then labels
and log information are checked to be sure there is no error in identification. COC information
accompanies the samples whether they are shipped by commercial carrier in accordance with
U.S. Department of Transportation regulations or transported by private company vehicle. The
carrier waybill number is included in the COC records.
The COC form will be signed by each individual who has the samples in.their possession. An
off-site laboratory will not accept samples for analysis without a correctly prepared COC form.
Preparation of the COC form is as follows:
• The COC record for every sample is initiated in the field by the person collecting the
sample. Every sample is assigned a unique identification number that is entered on the
COC form. Samples can be grouped for shipment using a single form.
• The record is completed in the field to indicate project, sampling team, etc.
Sjose-N.1Us&WhadnisT-onvard Landh7AAsbestos Mm#mingwboslos Plan Fnal Draft sf.doc 7-1
9.6.05
