i
3. ANALYSIS AND RESULTS
Shaw selected Asbestos TEM Laboratories, Inc. (ATEM) to perform the laboratory analysis for
this project. Each sample was analyzed for asbestos by the latest approved revision of NIOSH
i
ASBESTOS by TEM: Method 7402. The analytical results showed no detected amounts of
asbestos in any of the sample cassettes (Appendix D). Therefore, the lowest possible reading
from the analytical equipment can be assumed to be the maximum possible concentration of
asbestos in the cassettes. This concentration is reported as 0.0010 Fibers per cubic centimeter of
air (Fibers/CM3Air)• Using fiber dimensions reported in the ATEM report, the estimated fiber
volume of asbestos is 0.3125 cubic micrometers per Fiber (gm3/Fiber). With this volume and a
specific gravity of 3 for asbestos (as reported in the NIOSH asbestos data sheet, Appendix E),the
concentration can be converted to units of micrograms of asbestos per cubic meter of air
(µgAsb/m3Air) and is reportedly 0.000936 µgAsb/m3Air (Appendix F). Based on these results, the
® baseline asbestos level for the Forward landfill is 0.000936 99Asb/m3Air as shown in Table 1.
Table 1
Summary of Asbestos Concentrations at Forward Landfill
Sampling Date: July 26,2007
i
1 (Upwind) 67.1 912 < 0.0010 < 0.000936
j 2(Downwind) 68.9 936 < 0.0010 < 0.000936
3(Downwind) 65.3 888 < 0.0010 < 0.000936
4 Downwind 65.3 888 < 0.0010 < 0.000936
5(Downwind) 68.9 936 < 0.0010 < 0.000936
Blank NA NA < 0.0010 < 0.000936
1. standard cubic feet per minute
NAUsersUohn WebeMorward IandfilMsbestos4labestOs Report Final.doc - Rev.0,IWA7
119185 3
