collection. However, due to the limited sample volumes, lysimeter samples were only
0 analyzed for select general chemistry constituents and/or VOCs. As shown in Table 2-6,
two VOCs were measured above the PQL in the lysimeter samples collected during the
third quarter 2007 monitoring period.
2.1.6 Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface water
to site stormwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager,no
surface water was discharged from the facility during the reporting quarter. During the
third quarter 2007 monitoring period surface water stations FSW-1 and FSW-2 were
sampled on August 15, 2007. Table 2-7 summarizes the analytical results for surface
water samples collected at the Forward Unit. A comparison of upgradient (FSW-2)to
downgradient(FSW-1) surface water samples indicates generally similar concentrations
suggesting that the landfill operations are not impacting surface water quality.
2.1.7 Leachate Monitoring
Leachate sumps are inspected for the presence of leachate and observations are recorded
at least weekly by Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is
pumped into the surface impoundment(WMU F) for evaporation. During the third
quarter 2007, leachate was observed at holding areas WMUD-93/94, WMU D-02,
WMU FU-03,WMU FU-04,WMW FU-05, and WMU FU-06. The other holding areas
were reported to be dry by Forward Landfill personnel. Freeboard at WMU-F ranged
from approximately 8.50 feet to 9.25 feet during the third quarter 2007 monitoring
period. Appendix A presents copies of the leachate logs and the freeboard observation
logs.
Leachate samples were collected on a monthly basis and analyzed in the field for pH and
specific conductance. The results of monthly field monitoring measurements for the third
quarter 2007 are presented in Table 2-8.
Value Engineering conducted a gas test of the leachate collection and removal system
(LCRS)on August 23,2007 at the Forward Unit. The test results indicate that an open-
air conduit is present across the LCRS units, and no excessive leachate is backed up in
the drainage layer or sump of the LCRS units. A summary of the test results is provided
in Appendix A.
2.2 SUMMARY
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the third quarter 2007
monitoring period are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring periods.
Eight new historical intrawell maximum values were measured in samples collected from
groundwater monitoring wells during the third quarter 2007 monitoring period.
Excluding suspected laboratory/field contaminants, estimated trace-level VOCs were
measured in wells MW-10,MW-14, MW-16, and MW-21; and one VOC was measured
D:\2007 0043\ForwardAusdn sum07.doc
- - 7
Geologic Associates
