2.2.1.3 PROPOSED MONITORING PARAMETERS <br /> As listed in Table 6, the monitoring parameters that are proposed for the new <br /> Forward Landfill expansion are consistent with the parameters that are currently <br /> included at the two sites. <br /> 2.2.2 GROUNDWATER CONTROL <br /> Two groundwater extraction wells (EW-1 and EW-2) with a combined design <br /> capacity of 305 gallons per minute (gpm) were installed to extract impacted <br /> groundwater at the existing Austin Road Landfill (see Figure 2). VOCs are stripped <br /> from the extracted water at the facility's groundwater treatment plant, and the <br /> treated water is currently discharged to the North Branch. The groundwater <br /> treatment system and discharge are regulated under the Austin Road Landfill <br /> WDRs. <br /> As proposed in the Revised EFS recently prepared for the existing Austin Road <br /> Landfill by HA/AEE (2001), treated water would no longer be discharged to the <br /> North Branch but, would instead, be reintroduced to the aquifer in the vicinity of <br /> monitoring well MW-11. In combination with plans for an enhanced landfill gas <br /> collection system, reintroduction of treated water to the aquifer is expected to <br /> reduce existing VOC impacts below Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) <br /> (drinking water standards) within five years and below the Water Standard (1 part <br /> per billion) within nine years. <br /> 2.3 SURFACE WATER <br /> 2.3.1 SURFACE WATER PROTECTION <br /> The only surface water bodies adjacent to the site are the North Branch and South <br /> Branch of the South Fork of Little Johns Creek which are tributary to the San <br /> Joaquin River. The North Branch flows along the southern border of the existing <br /> Austin Road Landfill, and the South Branch flows along the southern border of the <br /> existing Forward Landfill.
