(chloromethane and bis[2-ethylhexyl]phthalate), estimated trace concentrations (between
the method detection limit [MDL] and the practical quantitation limit [PQL]) of 1,1-
dichloroethane (1,1-DCA), dichlorodifluoromethane(DCDFM), tetrachloroethene(PCE),
trichloroethene (TCE), and trichlorofluoromethane (TCFM) were measured in the sample
collected from wells MW-10; and trace concentrations of 1,1-DCA and TCE were
measured in the sample collected from well M -14. In addition, PCE was measured
above the PQL in the sample collected from well MW-14.
On behalf of Forward Inc., GLA prepared a letter report dated February 14, 2001
(RWQCB Case No. 2209), to assess the source and potential impacts of low-level VOCs
in groundwater adjacent to the Forward Landfill. The letter report concluded that the
sporadic detection of low-level VOCs in groundwater(and lysimeter samples) at the
Forward Unit are most likely due to landfill gas from unlined unit WMU-B. Forward has
continued to minimize gas related impacts to groundwater by limiting interim fill areas
that promote ponding of water. Furthermore, in accordance with CCR Title 27, Section
20937, Forward continues to install additional landfill gas extraction wells, as needed.
New Historical Intrawell Maximum Values
As shown in the table below, four new historical intrawell maximum values were
measured during the first quarter 2009 monitoring event. It should be noted, however,
that chloromethane is a suspected field/laboratory contaminant since similar
concentrations were measured in QA/QC blank samples during the monitoring event.
New Historical Intrawell Maximum Values
Well Analyte New Value Previous Value
MW-10 Chloromethane 0.45j gg/L 0.27j gg/L
MW-13 Chloromethane 0.42j gg/L 0.19j gg/L
MW-14 Chloromethane 0.56 gg/L 0.29j gg/L
MW-22 Total Dissolved Solids 680 m /L 677 m /L
Concentration Limit Thresholds
Data obtained during the first quarter 2009 monitoring period were compared to
concentration limits (CLs) as specified in the RPCMP for the Forward Landfill. CLs
were calculated by Herst&Associates and are included in Appendix D. Table 2-4
summarizes CLs that were exceeded in samples collected from groundwater monitoring
wells during the first quarter 2009. As summarized in this table, CLs were exceeded for
wells MW-lA, MW-2A, MW-3A, MW-10, M -13, MW-14, MW-15, MW-16,
MW-17, MW-18, and MW-19. In accordance with the RPCMP, wells MW-lA, MW-3A,
MW-13, MW-14, MW-16, and MW-17, with CL exceedances (other than arsenic,
bicarbonate, hexavalent chromium, nitrate as nitrogen, and sulfate, which the RPCMP do
not consider impact constituents)will be resampled in May during the second quarter
2009 sampling event and a second independent sample will be collected in June 2009.
The results of the retesting events will be submitted to DTSC and RWQCB under
D:\2009_001'AFA_1 Q09.doc
6 GeoLogic Associates
