inspection, Del-Tech reported that the system was offline due to a tripped main breaker
switch. The main breaker switch was reset and the system was restarted. During the July
29, 2010 inspection, Del-Tech noted that the pump motor in extraction well EW-3R had
failed and was offline. Del-Tech replaced the pump motor on August 13, 2010. During
the August 15 inspection Del-Tech noted that the tower had calcified so that it was not
performing the air stripping process effectively. The system was taken offline for
cleaning and repairs and the system was restarted on August 19, 2010. No other
downtime was reported for the GTF during the monitoring period. It should be noted,
however, that the system was taken offline on October 15, 2010 due to increasing
backpressure in the influent line at the tower. Inspection of the air stripper tower
indicated that the packing material has calcified and needs to be replaced. It is estimated
that the system will be restarted on November 1, 2010 following replacement of the
packing material and other system improvements.
Influent and Effluent Monitoring—During the monitoring period, effluent samples were
collected monthly from the GTF and submitted for analysis of VOCs by EPA Method
8260B. The July and September 2010 effluent sample were also analyzed for TDS.
Table 1 summarizes the field and analytical results for the GTF during the third quarter
2010 monitoring period. As shown on Table 1,three VOCs were measured above the
practical quantitation limit(PQL) and one trace level VOC was measured in the effluent
sample collected during the July 2010 sampling event and one trace level VOC was
measured in the effluent sample collected during the August 2010 sampling event. No
VOCs were detected in the effluent sample collected during the September sampling
event. It is believed that sporadic detection of VOCs in the effluent samples collected
during the monitoring period are the result of the calcification of the air stripper. As
discussed above the system was taken offline on October 15, 2010 to make the necessary
repairs to the system to ensure proper groundwater treatment.
GLA hopes that the information provided herein is sufficient for your records.
