applied to evacuate the accumulated sample. As recorded in the field notes for lysimeters
(Appendix C)and summarized on Table 2-5, all lysimeters were reported dry, and as a
result, no soil-pore liquid samples were collected during the current monitoring period.
2.1.6 Leachate Monitoring
Leachate sumps are inspected for the presence of leachate and observations are recorded
at least weekly by Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is
pumped into the surface impoundment(WMU F)for evaporation. During the second
quarter 2010, leachate was observed at all of the holding areas except WMU D-87 and
WMU D-88 AB. Freeboard at WMU-F ranged from approximately 7.5 to 11.17 feet
during the second quarter 2010 monitoring period. Appendix A presents copies of the
leachate logs and the freeboard observation logs.
Leachate samples were collected on a monthly basis and analyzed in the field for pH and
specific conductance. Results of monthly field monitoring measurements for the second
quarter 2010 are presented in Table 2-6.
2.1.7 Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface water
to site stormwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager, no
surface water was discharged from the facility during the reporting quarter. Surface
water samples were collected from surface water location SW-2 on June 3, 2010 and the
results are summarized on Table 2-7. Surface-water location FSW-1 was reported dry
during the monitoring period.
2.2 SUMMARY
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the second quarter 2010
monitoring period are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring periods.
During the second quarter 2010 monitoring period, three new historical intrawell
maximum values were measured in samples collected from groundwater monitoring
wells. The organic results for the Forward Unit indicate that DCDFM and TCFM were
measured above the PQL and 1,1-DCA, cis-1,2-DCE, PCE, and TCE were detected at
estimated trace concentrations in the sample collected from well MW-10. In the sample
collected from well MW-2A,toluene was measured above the PQL, and benzene and
total xylenes were detected at trace concentrations. In the samples collected from wells
MW-14 and MW-16, PCE was measured at trace concentrations. During the monitoring
period, CLs were exceeded in samples from three wells. However, the CL exceedances
were for a non-impact inorganic constituent(sulfate)and low-level VOCs have been
recognized previously and do not require retesting.
During the May and June 2010 inspections, the CEHD measured methane concentrations
exceeding the regulatory limit of five percent in perimeter soil-pore gas probe GP-11. In
response to elevated methane concentrations measured in this probe, Forward has
D:\2010_0013XFA_2Q10.doc
7 Geologic Associates
