2.1.6 Leachate Monitoring
Leachate sumps are inspected for the presence of leachate and observations are recorded
at least weekly by Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is
pumped into the surface impoundment(WMU F)for evaporation. During the first
quarter 2011, leachate was observed at all of the holding areas except WMU D-87 and
VVMU D-88 A/B. Freeboard at WMU-F ranged from approximately 5.58 to 11.08 feet
during the first quarter 2011 monitoring period. Appendix A presents copies of the
leachate logs and the freeboard observation logs.
Leachate samples were collected on a monthly basis and analyzed in the field for pH,
specific conductance, and temperature. Results of monthly field monitoring
measurements for the first quarter 2011 are presented in Table 2-6.
2.1.7 Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface water
to site storinwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager, there
were no discharges to surface water during the reporting quarter. During the first quarter
2011 monitoring period, surface-water monitoring stations FSW-1 and FSW-2 were
sampled on February 24, 2011. Table 2-7 summarizes the current analytical results of
surface water samples collected at the Forward Unit. As shown on Table 2-7, no VOCs
were detected in the surface water samples collected during the monitoring period. A
comparison of upgradient(FSW-2)to downgradient(FSW-1) surface water samples
indicates generally similar inorganic constituent concentrations suggesting that the
landfill operation are not impacting surface water quality.
2.2 SUMMARY
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the first quarter 2011
monitoring period are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring periods.
During the first quarter 2011 monitoring period, five new historical intrawell maximum
values were measured in samples collected from groundwater monitoring wells. The
organic results for the Forward Unit indicate that isopropyl ether was measured at a trace
concentration in the sample collected from well MW-2A; PCE was measured at a trace
concentration in the sample collected from well MW-14; and acetone was measured at a
trace concentration in the sample collected from well MW-16. CLs were exceeded for
sulfate at wells MW-10, MW-13, MW-15,MW-18, and MW-22; and for hexavalent
chromium at background well MW-23R. However, both analytes are classified as non-
impact constituents and no retesting is required.
During the March 2011 inspection, the CEHD measured methane concentrations
exceeding the regulatory limit of five percent in perimeter soil-pore gas probe GP-9
during the March 2011 CEHD inspection. In response to elevated methane
concentrations measured in this probe,Forward has made adjustments to the LFG
extraction wells to reduce landfill gas near GP-9.
D:U01 1_0050\FA_1Q1 Ldocx 7 Geologic Associates
