BASE AND SLOPE LEACHATE COLLECTION AND REMOVAL SYSTEM DESIGN
WMU FU-13
FORWARD LANDFILL
PROBLEM:
Size the leachate collection and removal system components for the base and slope in WMU FU-13.
GIVEN:
These calculations were previously performed for the WMUs D-95,D-97,D-98,D-99,D-00,D-01,D-02,
FU-03,FU-04,FU-05,FU-06,FU-08,and FU-10 design. The same methodology for performing the
previous calculations was used for the WMU FU-13 calculations. Previous calculations are used,
referenced,or attached,where applicable.
SUMMARY:
1. Required permeability of granular drainage material is 0.1 cm/sec.
2. Required permeability of coarse gravel is 1 cm/sec.
3. Specify 6-inch diameter,SDR I 1 HDPE pipe.
4. Specify perforation pattern for pipes of/2-inch diameter holes drilled at third points every 6-inches
along pipe length.
5. The temporary sumps are sized assuming the maximum leachate generation time is when there is only
a 10-ft lift of refuse in the cell.
6. Site personnel will select the pump size.
7. A 200-mil GDN with a hydraulic transmissivity of 1 x 10-5 M2/see measured using water at 68°F f3°F
(20°C f1.5°C) with a hydraulic gradient of 0.5 under a compressive stress of 10,000 psf The
geocomposite shall be tested with onsite soil above the Geocomposite and Geomembrane below the
Geocomposite. The minimum test duration shall be 100 hours and the report for the test results shall
include measurements at intervals over the entire test duration.
