INTERFACE LINER
SLOPE REINFORCEMENT DESIGN FOR SLOPES FLATTER THAN 6:1
WMU FU-13 FORWARD INC LANDFILL
PROBLEM:
Estimate the tensile strength of the geogrid required to support the WMU FU-13 interface liner in the
transition/connection area between WMU FU-08 North and WMU FU-13.
GIVEN:
The methodology presented in"Landfill Liner Support over Yielding Foundations"by Terence G. Sheridan
of Tensar Corp.estimates the required tensile strength of the geogrid to bridge a collapsible void under the
liner system. Based on discussions with the landfill operator,no voids as large as a refrigerator were
disposed in the area under consideration. Refuse placed consisted of MSW and C&D wastes. The
maximum estimated collapsible void size is approximately 4-ft.
The calculations for geogrid reinforcement were previously performed for WMU FU-06,WMU FU-08,and
WMU FU-10 and these calculations are still applicable.
SUMMARY:
1. The long-term tensile strength required is 551 lbs/ft. Tensar UX 1100 will meet this requirement.
2. The required overlap is approximately 3-ft.
