Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
• pan lysimeter WMU-D01N, approximately 200 gallons of liquid were pumped from the
pan and discharged to surface impoundment WMU F (North).
•
2.1.6 Leachate/Surface Impoundment Monitoring
For the Forward Unit, leachate sumps and surface impoundments are inspected weekly
by Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is pumped into the
surface impoundment WMU F (North) for evaporation. During the fourth quarter 2014,
leachate was observed at holding areas WMU D-89, WMU D-93/94, WMU D-01N/S, and
WMU D-02 and a total of 33,100 gallons of leachate was removed from the lined areas
at an average rate of 364 gallons per day. For surface impoundment WMU-F (North),
freeboard ranged from approximately 9.50 to 10.42 feet during the fourth quarter 2014
monitoring period. Appendix A presents copies of the leachate observation logs,
freeboard observation logs, and dissolved oxygen measurements.
Leachate samples from Forward Unit and Compost Area retention basins are analyzed in
the field for pH, specific conductance, temperature, and turbidity on a quarterly basis.
Results of quarterly field monitoring measurements for the fourth quarter 2014 are
presented in Table 2-6. In addition to quarterly monitoring, leachate is sampled
annually during the fourth quarter monitoring period for the parameters listed in Table
2-1. Results of quarterly field monitoring and analytical results for the fourth quarter
2014 are presented in Table 2-6. As shown in Table 2-6, one VOC (methyl ethyl ketone)
was detected in the fourth quarter Compost Area leachate sample. Of note, due to a
miscommunication between Del -Tech staff, the annual leachate sample was not
collected for the Forward Unit. The annual leachate sample for the Forward Unit was
collected in January 2015 and the results will be reported in the first quarter 2015
report.
2.1.7 Surface Water Monito
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface
water to site stormwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager,
there were no discharges from the Forward Unit to surface water (waters of the United
States) during the reporting period. Surface water monitoring stations FSW-1
(downstream) and FSW-2 (upstream) were sampled on December 17, 2014 for the
fourth quarter 2014 monitoring period. Table 2-7 summarizes the current analytical
results of surface water samples collected at the Forward Unit. As shown on Table 2-7,
no VOCs were detected in either sample, and no CLs were exceeded for FSW-1. Of note,
CLs were not updated since station FSW-1 was only sampled once since the CLs were
last updated.
M:\ 2014.0012\FA_4Q14.docx 8
1/28/2015, Rev. 0
