Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
leachate was observed at holding areas WMU D-89, WMU D-93/94, WMU D-04 N/S, and
WMU D-02 and a total of 27,200 gallons of leachate was removed from the lined areas
at an average rate of 299 gallons per day. For surface impoundment WMU-F (North),
freeboard ranged from approximately 10.09 to 10.92 feet during the third quarter 2014
monitoring period. Appendix A presents copies of the leachate observation logs,
freeboard observation logs, and dissolved oxygen measurements.
Leachate samples are analyzed in the field for pH, specific conductance, temperature,
and turbidity on a quarterly basis. Results of quarterly field monitoring measurements
for the third quarter 2014 are presented in Table 2-6.
2.1.7 Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface
water to site stormwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager,
there were no discharges from the Forward Unit to surface water (waters of the United
States) during the reporting period. Surface water monitoring stations FSW-1
(downstream) and FSW-2 (upstream) were reported dry on August 25, 2014 during the
third quarter 2014 monitoring period. As a result, no samples were collected.
2.2 Summary
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the third quarter 2014
monitoring period are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring
periods. A non-statistical indication of release was identified at well MW-2A as a result
of one VOC measured at a quantifiable concentration, and at well MW-17 as a result of
two VOCs measured at estimated-trace concentrations. No other VOCs were detected
in groundwater samples during the third quarter 2014 monitoring period. For the
inorganic monitoring parameters, one or more CLs were exceeded at wells MW-1, MW-
2A, MW-10, MW-13, MW-15, MW-17, MW-19, and MW-24. Verification sampling for
the organic and inorganic CL exceedances is scheduled for October 2014. During the
monitoring period surface water sampling locations were reported dry. For vadose zone
monitoring up to 14 VOCs were detected in soil-pore liquid samples and approximately
9600 gallons of liquid was pumped from pan lysimeter WMU-D01N.
3.0 AUSTIN UNIT
3.1 Water Quality Monitoring
3.1.1 Sampling and Laboratory Analyses
Del-Tech performed routine monitoring of DMP, CAP, EMP wells at the Austin Unit
during the third quarter 2014 monitoring period. Depth-to-water measurements were
recorded in the groundwater monitoring wells on August 11 and 12, 2014.
M:\2014.0012\FA_3Q14.docx 8
10/31/2014,Rev.0
