Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
also measured above its PQL in the sample collected from well 8106-A. In addition,
trace concentrations of 1,1-dichloroethene and cis-1,2-dichloroethene were measured
in well 8106-A and DCDFM in well 7898-A.
3.1.8 Vadose Zone Monitoring
The current vadose-zone monitoring network at the Austin Unit consists of seven
lysimeters. The lysimeter locations are shown on Figure 3-1. As shown on Table 2-5A,
with the exception of FU-04W all of the lysimeters were reported dry, and there was
insufficient soil-pore liquid ( 7 milliliters)from FU-04W for analysis.
3.1.9 Leachate/Surface Impoundment Monitoring
Leachate sumps and surface impoundments are inspected weekly by Forward Landfill
personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is pumped into the surface
impoundment WMU F (West) for evaporation. During the first quarter 2015, leachate
was observed at holding areas WMU FU-03, WMU FU-04, WMU FU-05, WMU FU-06,
WMU FU-10, WMU FU-13, and WMU FU-14 and a total of 113,650 gallons of leachate
was removed from the lined areas at an average rate of 1,249 gallons per day. For
surface impoundment WMU-F (West) freeboard ranged from approximately 5.25 to
5.50 feet during the first quarter 2015 monitoring period. Appendix A presents copies
of the leachate observation logs, freeboard observation logs, and surface impoundment
monitoring log.
Leachate samples were collected on a quarterly basis and analyzed in the field for pH,
specific conductance, temperature, and turbidity. The results of quarterly field
monitoring measurements for the first quarter 2015 are presented in Table 3-7.
3.1.10 Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface
water to site stormwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager,
there were no discharges to surface water during the reporting period. Surface water
monitoring stations ASW-1 (upstream) and ASW-2 (downstream) were sampled on
February 18, 2015 for the first quarter 2015 monitoring period. Table 3-8 summarizes
the current analytical results of surface water samples collected at the Austin Unit. As
shown on Table 3-8, the CL for sulfate was exceeded in both upgradient and
downgradient surface water monitoring stations, however, no VOCs were detected. The
similar concentration of sulfate measured in the upstream sample suggests that the
elevated sulfate is a background condition.
M:\2015.0014\FA 1Q15.docx 12
4/27/2015,Rev.0
