Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
2.2 Summary
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the first quarter 2016
monitoring period are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring
periods. A non -statistical indication of release was identified at wells MW -13 and MW -
16 as a result of one VOC (diisopropyl ether) measured at quantifiable concentrations,
and at wells MW -14 and MW -17 as a result of three VOCs measured at estimated -trace
concentrations in each well. No other VOCs were detected in groundwater samples
during the first quarter 2016 monitoring period. For the inorganic monitoring
parameters, one or more CLs were exceeded at wells MW -2A, MW -10, MW -13, MW -18,
and MW -22. Verification sampling for the organic and inorganic CL exceedances is
scheduled for April 2016. For constituent concentrations in "tracking mode", increasing
temporal trends were calculated for nitrate in well MW -10 and for chloroform in well
MW -17. Surface water samples collected from the upstream and downstream surface
water monitoring stations during the first quarter 2016 monitoring period are generally
consistent with each other; no VOCs were detected and no CLs were exceeded. Vadose
zone monitoring stations were reported dry or had an insufficient volume of soil -pore
liquid to sample.
3.0 AUSTIN UNIT
0 3.1 Water Quality Monitoring
3.1.1 Sampling and Laboratory Analyses
Del -Tech performed routine monitoring of DMP, CAP, EMP wells at the Austin Unit
during the first quarter 2016 monitoring period. Depth -to -water measurements were
recorded in the groundwater monitoring wells and groundwater, surface water, and
leachate sampling was performed between February 4 and 10, 2016.
Samples were collected from each sample point with sufficient liquid and submitted to
BC for analysis of the routine monitoring parameters stipulated in RWQCB Order No. 135-
2014-0006. Table 2-1 presents the monitoring schedule and summarizes the analytical
methods utilized during the current monitoring period. Wells AMW-1, AMW-7, AMW-
10, and AMW-13 were also sampled for total arsenic, nitrogen, iron, and manganese for
the CWLAIVI program. Water quality samples were also analyzed in the field for ORP,
turbidity, temperature, specific conductance, and pH and recorded on well data sheets.
The groundwater monitoring wells, surface water monitoring locations, and leachate
were sampled in accordance with the sampling and analysis plan detailed in Appendix D.
The well data sheets, raw laboratory data, certificates of analyses, and chain -of -custody
records related to the sampling program are included in Appendix E. Field and
laboratory analyses are summarized in Tables 3-1 through 3-8 and cumulative tabulated
data for all monitoring points and constituents for groundwater, unsaturated zone,
leachate, and surface water are presented in Appendix E.
M:\ 2016.0007\FA 1Q16.docx 9
