INTERFACE LINER
SLOPE REINFORCEMENT DESIGN FOR SLOPES STEEPER THAN 6:1
WMU FU-17,FORWARD,INC.LANDFILL
PROBLEM:
Estimate the thickness of subgrade fill required to support the WMU FU-17 interface liner on the south
facing former Austin Road Landfill slope.
GIVEN:
These calculations were previously performed for the WMU D-94,D-97,D-98,D-99,FU-03,FU-04,FU-
05,FU-06,FU-08,FU-10,and FU-13 designs. Since the interface slope liner and LCRS components are
approximately the same as for the previous designs, the methodology used in the previous calculations is
applicable to the WMU FU-17 design.
The methodology presented in Jang and Montero(1993)estimates the required subgrade fill thickness to
bridge a 3 ft by 3 ft by 6 ft void under the liner system. The dimensions of the void were estimated by
assuming a worst case scenario of an item as large as a refrigerator collapsing directly under the lining
system.
SUMMARY:
1. For the 4.5:1 Austin Road Landfill slope, the additional subgrade fill thickness should be
approximately 1-ft.
