Table 5-10
(OHS TABLE I)
MULTI-YEAR PLANNING ESTIMATE OF HAZARDOUS
WASTE PRODUCED BY MAJOR GENERATORS, HOUSEHOLDS, AND SMALL QUANTITY GENERATORS
(TONS PER YEAR)
(Continued)
1 . From Column 3 in Table A. Discussions with generators indicated that 1986 data are representative of an average
year. Data are adjusted for routes service haulers and wastes exported out-of-state.
2. Includes contaminated soils and asbestos-containing wastes and wastes designated "IV on DHS Manifests.
3. Data provided by DHS "Summary Disposal Method by TSD Within County" and verified by survey. Based on discussions
with transfer station operators, wastes are not double counted.
4. There are no known varianced/exempted wastes.
5. Small Quantity Generator data were estimated by applying a U.S. EPA method in accordance with Part F, Attachment A, B
and C in the DHS Technical Reference Manual , June 1987 (see Table J) . The SQG methodology is based on the "no
survey" method described in the DHS's technical reference manual . This method is based on a national survey
conducted by EPA on SQG hazardous waste generation. EPA divided industries into 22 industry groups and indicated the
types of wastes generated by each. EPA also noted the percentage of the total hazardous waste generated by each
industry group. Each industry group was multiplied by a factor which represented the total waste generation of that
industry group. The product in turn was multiplied by the fraction of the waste stream comprising each waste type
generated by the group. The volumes of waste types generated by the industry groups were then summed and grouped
according to the 17 California waste groups. The data were converted from metric tons to short tons.
6. Household hazardous waste data are based on the following assumptions. 7.4 pounds per household per year and
209,037 households in the County in 1986. The unit factor was based on several studies by W. L. Rathje et al . , 1987.
PJ9 9390502B.00D 5-37 Rev. 0 11/10/88 j
ie i ir km imm 'rte 1= °r ' ® ! ® ' ® ' " r ' ' r ®' ■i 1
