2. Transformation Activities:
During 1990, the County actively diverted waste
from landfills with three programs. First, wood from
construction sites, agriculture, and tree trimmings were
processed into fuel and burned at various waste to
energy facilities in the area. Annually, 4,415 tons of
wood were processed.
The second program involved collecting used tires
at disposal sites and tire dealers, transporting the
tires to a tire burning facility in Stanislaus County,
recycling the useable materials, and burning the
remainder in a waste to energy facility. Twenty five
percent of the diverted tires were recycled and seventy
five percent were transformed. Of 185 tons handled, 46
tons were recycled and 139 tons transformed.
The third program involved sorting and removing
waste at the County's Lovelace Transfer Station and
delivering the waste to the Stanislaus County waste to
energy facility for burning to produce electricity.
Under this program 6, 172 tons of waste from the
unincorporated area were transformed in 1990.
Table 2-5 lists the transformation activities for
the unincorporated area, by tons and percentage of the
total solid waste stream.
TABLE 2-5
COUNTY UNINCORPORATED AREA
1990 TRANSFORMATION QUANTITIES
WASTE TYPE TONS %
WOOD 4,415 3 . 09
TIRES 139 0. 10
STANISLAUS COUNTY WTE 6, 172 4. 32
TOTAL TRANSFORMATION 10, 726 7. 51
Chapter 2 - Waste Generation 10
